EQC is New Zealand’s national natural disaster insurer. I joined the EQC board in July 2018, at a time when the organisation is making significant changes in both its culture and its practices, whilst also facing a Public Inquiry and intense public scrutiny. I am a member of the Reinsurance and Resilience subcommittee, responsible for overseeing the placement of our reinsurance contracts and for advancing the resilience agenda in New Zealand.

Resilient Organisations Ltd

Resilient Organisations Ltd is a social enterprise based in Christchurch, with 8 employees, delivering research and consulting advice on how to improve organisational resilience. It is a small team with an excellent national and international reputation for thought-leadership. We work closely with a wide range of clients across the public, private and not-for-profit sectors. Examples include working with the Australian Attorney General’s Department to benchmark the resilience of Australia’s critical infrastructure sectors; working with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies to design tools and resources to help small business around the world better prepare for disasters; and working with numerous crucial infrastructure providers, government departments, and private sector organisations to develop, implement and measure the effectiveness of crisis preparedness and resilience initiatives . We also work with large organisations facing conditions of deep uncertainty, to design decision making frameworks for prioritising and supporting the business case for large capital investments. I was Managing Director of Resilient Organisations Ltd from 2014 – 2018.

Over the past 15 years I have led several multi-million dollar research contracts, including the Resilient Organisations Research Programme, the Economics of Resilient Infrastructure research programme and being Principle Investigator on QuakeCoRE, the New Zealand Centre of Research Excellence on Earthquake Resilience. I have a long and ongoing relationship with the University of Canterbury.
