Academic Quality Agency

April 2014 - December 2014 (8 months)

The Academic Quality Agency provides external academic quality assurance for all New Zealand universities via a five-yearly cycle of audits. Key principles underpinning AQA academic audits are: peer review, evidence-based, externally benchmarked, and enhancement-led. As the national student union president I was the conduit for student voice on the committee - bringing a customer-centric perspective to the governance meetings.

New Zealand Union of Students' Associations

December 2013 - January 2015 (1 years)

(1) As the president of New Zealand Union of Students’ Associations (NZUSA) I was an advocate for over 400,000 tertiary students in New Zealand; (2) I maintained constructive relationships with all political parties in advance of the 2014 General Election – this resulted in a majority of political parties adopting robust pro-student policy; (3) I coordinated and led a nation-wide campaign focused on promoting civic participation among students. I successfully lobbied to install voting booths on campuses, developed a comprehensive policy matrix informing students how to vote, and had a strong on-campus presence; and (4) I had regular appearances on news channels including: TV 3, Māori TV, Radio NZ, the Herald, the Otago Daily Times, and other student print and radio media.

The Kennedy's Ltd

January 2013 - December 2013 (11 months)

After the student bar Shadows had been liquidated the 2012, I negotiated the purchase of the chattels from the liquidator Grant Thornton. After which, I became the Chair of the board for The Kennedy's Limited - a new legal entity focused on providing food and beverage services to students; this required me to: hire a new general manager, negotiate new contracts with suppliers, acquire a liquor licence, and a negotiate a 13 year sublease from the university.

Auckland University Students' Association

January 2013 - December 2013 (11 months)

(1) After determining what issues were most important in the tertiary sector, I led a series of local and national campaigns to highlight how recent legislative changes had reduced the support available to students; (2) I created win-win outcomes for students in our negotiations with the university. As the conduit for student voice on campus I was able to make evidence-led arguments to embed feedback from students within programme changes.

Student Job Search

November 2012 - November 2014 (2 years)

Student Job Searches matches young talent with their first career.

Administrative Vice President

Auckland University Students' Association

January 2012 - December 2012 (11 months)

The introduction of Voluntary Student Membership in 2012 changed the legislative framework in which universities and students’ associations were funded. I co-led negotiations to adopt a new funding model to protect AUSA’s long-term interests. The result of which, is that AUSA remained autonomous and critical advocacy and pastoral services remained independent. The resulting deal with the university was for 28 years and is valued at $620k per annum.
