After many years of deliberation, the dioceses and hui amorangi of the Anglican Church in New Zealand established a bulk buying operation for its commercial insurance. As well as expanding the level and reach of the cover, we have reduced premiums by about 25% We also offer claims settling support and have been very busy following the earthquakes in Christchurch in September 2010 and February 2011.

New Zealand Anglican Church Pension Board

In 1972, six diocesan pension funds were merged into one national pension fund. In the 1980, management of a national welfare fund was added. Since then, a defined contribution and a Kiwisaver fund (Koinonia) have been added. We have about $NZ 130 million under managerment and are probably the last superannuation scheme in New Zealand to do our own administration and investment - all other schemes have outsourced one or both functions.

I lead this organisation through a time of profound change. The decision was made to move all existing 23 products supported by 5 computer systems to one state of the art master trust on one computer system. In the midst of the change our overseas head office decided to demutualise so we had to pause while solving how to distribute shares to existing clients and then start again. The exercise was successful and, although many people were made redundant, profitability was restored and the master trust dominates that market.
